EP230 - How to plant plug plants

On Todays 5minute Friday, we are going to plant plug plants.

We get asked a lot about planting up our plug plants. We have here our starter/plug plant, it is established and well rooted, but a relatively young plant, we feel it is generally better to pot them up. Some varieties like Mint for example, can be put straight in the ground at certain times of the year, but you don’t really gain anything from doing this. You will find by potting it up, you well get a more established plant quicker.

I am going to pot up Lemon Verbena today into the 9cm pot. If you are not familiar with it, it is a fabulous herb with a lemon sherbet scent to it.

Have you seen our stunning spring bulbs yet, browse here. (pre order)

  1. Fill the pot with a good, multi-purpose compost, then tap it gently to release any air gaps.
  2. Make a hole, the size of the root ball or a fraction bigger.
  3. The plugs are grown in a biodegradable paper pot, please don’t take it off, just pop it in the hole as it is, and gently just tuck it in. That is your plug potted up.
