Keep Your Garden Looking Its Best, Even In A Heatwave!
This week I’m giving you a few tips to keep your containers going in the height of summer heat!
Feeding
Feeding flowering or fruit producing plants is just as important as watering them if you want to keep them going through the growing season! Producing flowers and fruit takes a lot of energy, so using some good quality, multi-purpose plant food every two weeks as a general rule will help keep your plants looking their best!
Deadheading
Deadheading any flowering plant is important for encouraging new growth and increasing the production of flowers during the blooming season. Deadheading plants in your containers not only helps encourage them to keep growing, but also keeps your containers looking better.
All you need to do is find the flowers that have gone over and pinch them out. Check your plants regularly and repeat when needed!
Watering
If you're keeping a garden, you'll most likely be watering regularly, but this is especially crucial in the summer. With temperatures of over 30 degrees some days, water everyday and early in the day to reduce the amount of water that gets lost to evaporation. Feel the compost, if its not wet, water again. If you can, top dressing your plants will help them retain moisture and keep their roots cool.
Plants in containers are relying on you for their water as their roots are held in the container and cant reach a water table like plants in the ground can, so it is essential you water regularly and well!
