EP229 - How to divide a plant and take Cuttings

On Todays 5minute Friday, we are going to divide a plant and take cuttings.

We have a fantastic 5 minute Friday for you today, we are going to divide this plant, and take cuttings from it, so propagating it and making more plants.

This is Mandarine Mint, an interesting mint, with a pungent smell, which I like, it's really useful to use in summer drinks. So, I am going to take cuttings from it and then divide it, so 2 different ways to produce more plants for free.

Browse our fabulous Spring Bulbs here.

  1. For the Cuttings, fill the pot with a good, multi-purpose compost, then tap it gently to release any air gaps.
  2. Take a tip cutting, just below the leaf break and that will give you a good size cutting.
  3. Make a whole and pop the cutting in, gently tucking it in, be careful not to bruise it by pushing it in. It is best to take 2 in case one doesn’t take. Give it a good water.
  4. Next, we are going to divide it. This has grown from 1 cutting, and if you can see, it almost looks like 2 plants. Release the plant by squeezing the pot.
  5. Divide the plant in to 2 parts, this can be a far more successful way of growing new plants, there is less of them than cuttings, but they should grow really well.
  6. Pop one of the halves into a pot, and then just tuck the compost around it gently. Tap it to release any air gaps, and then repeat with the other half. If you let this grow, in around 5 months, you will be able to do the same again.
