On Todays 5minute Friday, we have some advice for growing Chilli Plants.
We are just going to chat about what you should do with your chilli plants. Often, we get a lot of people who grow chilli plants, say they grow fantastically, they are lush and they get loads of fruit, but they may not have any heat or flavour, or both.
The main reason is, chillies need a little bit of ‘stressing’. These days we tend to think when growing plants, is that if we keep watering them and feeding them, that is the best way to grow them.
This is the time to stress the chillies, they have flowers, and fruit and what we tend to do, is pick one day of the week, ie a Friday, and let them dry out a bit, even let them wilt a little, which pushes all the flavour in to the fruit. There are other ways of doing it, but this is by far the easiest way. The plant will be fine, come the Saturday you water as usual and they will perk up straight away.
You may sacrifice a tiny bit of fruit size and number, but chillies are quite productive, so may have enough fruits anyway, but this way, they will have way more flavour.
