Sowing Chilli Seeds
This week I’m showing you how to sow Chilli seeds. Whether you like your chillies to melt your face off, or prefer a gentler, fragrant heat, chillies are a fantastic houseplant to grow, and relatively easy to care for. They look amazing in a windowsill, and can provide you incredible fruit year-after-year.
Why Now?
If you want to get the most out of your chillies, it is essential to plant them early to give them the most time to mature. This is crucial for hotter varieties that require that extra time to produce the fruit they are best known for. While you may need to provide a little extra light and heat through the UK winter, it is well worth it for these plants.
What You’ll Need:
-
Chilli seeds
-
Pots or Cell Trays
- A Plate
- Compost
Step-by-Step:
- Start by filling your pot or cells with compost, leaving a little room to cover over the seeds.
- Take your seeds and place on the surface of the compost.
- Push your seeds just below the surface, roughly as deep as the seed itself is tall
- Cover your seeds over with a light layer of compost and water well.
Aftercare:
Keep the plants in a windowsill or greenhouse. Chillies are not native to the UK and do not like the cold, so keeping them somewhere warm will bring out the best in them. Once they are established, they can be moved somewhere cooler, but to get the most out of them they need to be warm.
