5 Minute Friday - Sowing and Growing Nasturtium

Sowing Nasturtium Seeds

This week I’m showing you how to sow Nasturtium seeds, and then answering some questions about how to take care of the plants. These seeds are super easy to sow, and will grow perfectly in a pot, hanging basket, or border!

Why Nasturtium?

Nasturtium are a great plant for growers of all skills for a number of reasons. The seeds aren't absolutely tiny, they don't require much to grow, and they will happily co-exist in almost any space with your other plants. Many growers even use them as "sacrifice" plants in allotments or borders to keep Black Fly away from other plants.

What You’ll Need:

  • Nasturtium seeds

  • Pots, cell trays, hanging baskets, or a border

  • Water
  • Compost

Step-by-Step:

  1. Start by filling your pot or cells with compost, leaving a little room to cover over the seeds.
  2. Take your seeds and place on the surface of the compost.
  3. Push your seeds just below the surface, roughly as deep as the seed itself is tall
  4. Cover your seeds over with a light layer of compost and water well.
  5. Keep the seeds somewhere frost free until ready to pot on (ignore if planting straight into a hanging basket or border)

Aftercare:

Nasturtium are easy plants, requiring water and semi-regular feeding (over feeding can contribute to Black Fly so be careful!) and little else. The plants can be pinched out, however don't require it, and avoiding doing this will allow them to trail beautifully over any container.
