5 Minute Friday - Potting Up Tomato Plants

Potting Up Tomatoes

This week I’m showing you how to pot up Tomato plants in a 9cm pot.

Whether you've grown your plants from a seed, or just got a delivery of plugs, its important to pot your plants up to let them properly establish, and give them enough room to grow.

Depending on the time of year, it may be a bit too cold still to put your plants outside, so sticking to a smaller, more manageable pot size early on will allow you to keep them inside and thriving before moving them outside in warmer weather.

What You’ll Need:

  • Tomato plants

  • A Pot

  • Water
  • Compost

Step-by-Step:

  1. Start by filling your pot with compost almost to the top.
  2. Make a hole with a finger, just large enough to drop your plugs in.
  3. Drop the plugs in. If your plant is slightly taller (as ours is in the video) don't be afraid to bury the plant a little, it'll give it the chance to establish new, stronger roots.
  4. Fill in the gaps around the plug.
  5. Water and keep your plants somewhere frost free until warmer weather.

Aftercare:

Tomatoes love sun and warmth, but hate the wind and wet, so keep them somewhere sheltered from the blustery weather until it gets a bit warmer.
