5 Minute Friday - Potting Up Chilli Plants

Potting Up Chillies

This week I’m showing you how to pot up Chilli plants.

Whether you've grown your plants from a seed, or just got a delivery of plugs, its important to pot your plants up to let them properly establish, and give them enough room to grow.

Depending on the time of year, it may be a bit too cold still to put your plants outside, so sticking to a smaller, more manageable pot size early on will allow you to keep them inside and thriving before moving them outside in warmer weather.

What You’ll Need:

  • Chilli plants

  • A Pot

  • Water
  • Compost

Step-by-Step:

  1. Start by filling your pot with compost almost to the top.
  2. Make a hole with a finger, just large enough to place your plants in.
  3. Drop the plants in. If your plant is slightly taller (as one of ours is in the video) don't be afraid to bury the plant a little, it'll give it the chance to establish new, stronger roots.
  4. Fill in the gaps around the plant.
  5. Water and keep your plants somewhere frost free until warmer weather.

Aftercare:

Chillies love sun and warmth, but hate the wind and wet, so keep them somewhere sheltered from the blustery weather until it gets a bit warmer. If you plants are taller then you may need to stake your plant, however leaving it until it begins bearing fruit will give the plant the chance to harden up and will make it sturdier.
