5 Minute Friday - How To Remove Side-shoots From a Tomato Plant

Remove Side-shoots To Give Your Plant More Strength

This week I’m showing you how to remove side-shoots from your tomato plants to help give the plant extra strength so it can produce even more delicious fruit!

Why remove side-shoots?

Depending on the type of tomato plants you have, you might not need to worry about this! If your plants are bush tomato plants, often grown in hanging baskets, then these side-shoots are not a problem at all as they'll help the plant bush out. However, if you're growing vine or upright tomato plants, then these side-shoots only offer the plant more leaves and take strength and energy away from growing the fruit that every gardener wants from their tomato plants!

What You’ll Need:

  • A tomato plant

  • Your hand

Step-by-Step:

  1. Find the side-shoots you want to remove
  2. Take your thumb and finger and pinch the shoot between them
  3. Using your nail if necessary, pull the shoot away from the plant
  4. Check the plant every few days as these shoots can grow surprisingly quickly!

Aftercare:

Keep checking the plant regularly, and keep caring for it how you regularly would! Doing this will mean you'll be enjoying delicious, home-grown tomatoes in no time!
