Take scented geranium cuttings for new, free plants - a step-by-step guide
This week I’m taking cuttings from scented geraniums. It’s a simple way to create new plants for free and ensure you keep your favourite varieties.
Background on Scented Geraniums
Scented geraniums (Pelargonium species and hybrids) are grown for their aromatic foliage, with scents ranging from rose to lemon, mint, and even nutmeg. While not hardy outdoors in the UK, they thrive in pots and can be overwintered indoors.
Why Now?
September is ideal for cuttings. Plants are still actively growing, but conditions are cooler, giving cuttings the best chance to root before winter.
What You’ll Need:
-
A healthy scented geranium
-
Sharp scissors or secateurs
-
Small pots with free-draining compost
-
Clear plastic bag or propagator
Step-by-Step:
-
Select non-flowering shoots around 7–10 cm long.
-
Cut just below a leaf joint and remove lower leaves.
-
Insert cuttings into moist, gritty compost.
-
Cover with a bag or propagator to retain humidity.
-
Place in bright, frost-free conditions.
Aftercare:
Check regularly for rot and remove any fallen leaves. Once rooted, pot on individually and keep them indoors over winter.
