Preparing a Geranium for Winter
This week I’m preparing my pelargoniums for winter. These colourful summer plants are tender and need protection if you want to keep them from year to year.
Background on Pelargoniums
Pelargoniums, often called geraniums in bedding displays, are native to South Africa and thrive in warm, sunny conditions. In the UK, they are grown as summer bedding but can be overwintered with care.
Why Now?
September is the time to act before frosts arrive. Preparing pelargoniums now gives them the best chance to survive indoors until next year.
What You’ll Need:
-
Healthy pelargonium plants
-
Sharp scissors or secateurs
-
Small pots with fresh compost
-
Frost-free, bright space (greenhouse, windowsill, or conservatory)
Step-by-Step:
-
Lift plants from containers or borders before the first frost.
-
Trim back growth by about half.
-
Remove dead or yellowing leaves.
-
Pot up into smaller containers with fresh compost.
-
Move indoors to a bright, frost-free place.
Aftercare:
Water sparingly over winter, keeping compost just moist. Remove any dead leaves promptly to prevent rot. In spring, feed and pot on for vigorous summer growth.
