Planting a Trailing Pansy Basket
This week I’m planting up a trailing pansy basket. It’s a quick job that makes a big difference to autumn and winter colour in the garden.
Background on Pansies
Pansies (Viola × wittrockiana) are a classic for cool-season displays. With their cheerful faces and long flowering period, they’re perfect for baskets where flowers can spill over the sides.
Why Now?
September is the ideal time. The soil is still warm, helping roots establish before the colder months. This gives you a strong, full basket that will bloom right through winter and into spring.
What You’ll Need:
-
A wire or plastic hanging basket with liner (only need a liner for wire baskets)
-
Multi-purpose compost, enriched with slow-release fertiliser
-
Trailing pansy plants
-
Watering can
Step-by-Step:
-
Line your basket and part-fill with compost.
-
Place trailing pansies through the sides if using a wire basket.
-
Add more compost, planting upright pansies in the centre.
-
Firm gently, leaving space at the top for watering.
-
Water well.
Aftercare:
Hang in a bright, sheltered spot. Water regularly, keeping compost moist but not waterlogged. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong the display.
