EP236 - How to pot up Helleborus

On Todays 5minute Friday, we are going to show you how to plant Hellebores.

If you don’t know Hellebores, they are sometimes called Christmas Roses, the reason is, they are usually the first thing to flower in the year, not quite in time for Christmas, although they can, but usually January, February.

They are a really tough, hardy plant, that can cope with so many conditions. Great in the garden, and stunning in the container, which is what we are going to do today.

Hellebores can really bulk up over time, so I’ve gone for a big container, one plant in here over the years, will fill this container, but I would prefer it was a bit quicker, so I am going to plant 3 in here.

We are planting these now, so we will get flowers after Christmas, they really do put on a show, especially once more established.

A classic winter plant, also known as Helleborus Orientalis, a gorgeous perennial with saucer shaped flowers. Make for attractive ground cover, or under trees with shade, or fabulous in pots. Also a real treat as a cut flower.

  1. Fill the container with compost, to the same level as the plant.
  2. Release the plant, by squeezing the pot.
  3. Place them a little away from the edge, and I will plant in a triangle. Repeat for the others.
  4. Then fill in the gaps with the compost and give them a good water.
  5. Hellebores, like Pansies are a good example of plants that do better in the cold, so these can go straight on the patio, they actually do better for being outside.
