EP234 - How to take cuttings from a Scented Geranium

On Todays 5minute Friday, we are going to show you how to take cuttings from a Scented Geranium.

We often concentrate on things that are nice and easy to do in the garden, and you get a lot of results from it. This one firstly, you will get an extra plant from it, plus it’s kind of like an insurance, whilst you take this one through the winter.

Taking the cutting this time of year, will get it well rooted before the really cold weather sets in, so then you will have 2 plants. We do this a lot with, geraniums, tarragon and lots of perennials, as we say it’s a great back up plan.

The Geranium (Pelargonium) we have here is scented and it’s called Cola Bottles, I wish you could smell it, it really has a lovely cola fragrance.

Scented Geraniums are well known and actively grown for, their fragrant scented leaves. These sumptuous delights can resemble, roses, chocolate, orange, apple all the way to eucalyptus. They are widely grown for their oil, used in perfumery. Fantastic to grow in pots, great in the conservatory or wonderful on a bright windowsill.

  1. Fill the pot with a good multipurpose compost, tap it down to release any air gaps.
  2. Take a sharp pair of snippers, and we are going to take a tip cutting. Hold the leaves so you have a good view, now with geraniums, they don’t like you to cut too near the leaf node, so I will cut just in between the nodes.
  3. Make a hole bigger than the cutting, to ensure we don’t bruise the cutting, and place it in gently, and just tuck it in.
  4. We find the tip cutting roots quite quickly, but you can use the same method and take cuttings down the stem, they don’t tend to root as easily, but it will still root, and this also helps the main plant bush out more.
