5 Minute Friday - Taking Mint Root Cuttings

Taking Mint Root Cuttings

This week Ray is taking cuttings from mint roots. Its an easy way to get yourself new plants without spending any money, and is perfect for the colder months when your plants may not have as much foliage. Mint is possibly the easiest plant to take cuttings from, so this is perfect for anyone, no matter how experienced.

Why Now?

Taking your mint cuttings early can give your plants a head start, giving you really great plants for late spring. It may be worth doing this later in the year, however using root cuttings as opposed to regular cuttings is much easier in the colder months if you didn't get started earlier in the winter but still want to get started on your spring garden.

What You’ll Need:

  • A healthy mint plant

  • Sharp scissors or secateurs

  • Small pots with free-draining compost

Step-by-Step:

  1. Remove your plants from their pots and select sections of root to cut (look for pieces that look to have "hairs" on them as these will produce new roots the quickest.)

  1. Cut as many pieces as you require before repotting your original plant.

  1. Insert cuttings into moist, gritty compost.

  1. Place in bright, frost-free conditions.

Aftercare:

Keep the plants in a warm, frost-free area, a propagator or greenhouse is ideal, but a windowsill will work perfectly. Once rooted, pot on individually and keep them indoors over winter.
