5 Minute Friday - Taking Mint Cuttings

Taking Mint Cuttings

This week I’m taking cuttings from mint. Its an easy way to get yourself new plants without spending any money. Mint is possibly the easiest plant to take cuttings from, so this is perfect for anyone, no matter how experienced.

Why Now?

Taking your mint cuttings early can give your plants a head start, giving you really great plants for late spring. It may be worth doing this earlier in the year, however thanks to a milder winter in 2025, we are still able to handle mints that haven't died back yet.

What You’ll Need:

  • A healthy mint plant

  • Sharp scissors or secateurs

  • Small pots with free-draining compost

Step-by-Step:

  1. Select sections of plant to cut, usually with enough growth to support a new plant and leave the previous plant able to regrow.

  1. Cut just below a leaf joint and remove lower leaves.

  1. Insert cuttings into moist, gritty compost.

  1. Place in bright, frost-free conditions.

Aftercare:

Keep the plants in a warm, frost-free area, a propagator or greenhouse is ideal, but a windowsill will work perfectly. Once rooted, pot on individually and keep them indoors over winter.
