Planting up a Winter Container
This week I’m showing you how to plant up a container that will stay stunning all through the winter. Picking a variety of hardy plants that fit a similar colour palette will not only give you a brilliant display to begin with, but will keep your garden looking fantastic with minimal intervention throughout the winter.
Why Now?
This is the ideal time to organise a container as the weather is beginning to turn, but we haven't hit the coldest months just yet. Getting your winter plants in the ground around this time allows them to make the most of the warmer days we have left, forming healthy and strong roots to last the winter.
What You’ll Need:
-
A container
-
A variety of hardy plants
- Compost
Step-by-Step:
- Fill your container with compost so that your largest plant sits at the right height.
- Place your plants into the container in reverse size order, filling in the compost to give the smaller ones the extra height needed.
- Fill in the gaps in the compost and give the container a good water
Aftercare:
Keep the plants watered, although don't overwater them, and ensure they can drain efficiently. Using hardy, low-input plants will give the best results over the winter and require the least maintenance. When the spring comes around, the hardy plants can be taken out and replanted to make space for more tender, seasonal plants.
