Thymus citriodorus 'Fragrantissimus Orange'

This Unusual Thyme is a must in your herb collection. A great variety to cook with or just to have the fragrance in the garden.

This low growing herb has a strong citrus flavour unusual for Thyme's. Its small, narrow, green leaves have a slightly greyish tinge and are very aromatic. They can be used as you would any other Thyme and go particularly well with stuffings, stews, jams and chutneys.
Grows to a height of around 10cm and can spread up to between 30-40cm.

About the Thyme 'Family':

Thyme is a member of the Lamiaceae family. They are very useful herbs with many culinary uses as well as being used medicinally and looking great as well. The wide spread of Thyme through out Europe is thought to be due to the Romans who used the scent to purify buildings and flavour cheeses and liqueurs. Thyme can be used both fresh or dried with fresh leaves able to be frozen to retain their flavour and dried Thyme retaining its flavour much better than most herbs. Thyme is very commonly used as part of a bouquet garni and as a component of herbes de Provence. The leaves are often used to add flavour to stews, salads, roasts and fish dishes. The plants themselves usually have long, thin and very fragrant leaves which are usually a rich green but can vary depending on the variety.

FAQ's

Is this plant "garden ready"

Maybe, we prefer our plug plants (also known as starter plants) to be potted up before going into the garden. The ideal size is a 9 cm pot, but it can be slightly smaller or larger if you would prefer. In the warmer months you may get away with planting straight out, but it is probably not worth the risk.

What compost should I use?

A good quality multipurpose compost is idea for this. You can use your own compost but make sure you know that it is not too high (or low) in nutrients.

Will I get the plants in the picture?

Yes, In the main picture. As this plant is a starter plant it may not look exactly the same at the moment but will grow to be the same as the picture. The plug plant picture is used to give you an idea of size and may not be the same variety.

Is this Plant Hardy (will it survive the winter)?

Yes, and no. Although Orange Scented will cope with low temperatures it really doe not like to sit wet. We prefer this Thyme to be brought in or make sure it has plenty of drainage. If your plant is young when going into the winter you may want to give it a bit of protection.

What is a plug plant?

A plug plant is a small starter plant that is perfect to pot up in to a larger plant. We grow and sell so many of these because the allow us to do it for such a good price.

Is the plug plant in the picture the one I will get?

No, we use this picture just to give you an idea of the size of the plant.

Pot sizes explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.
