About the Monarda 'Family': Monarda is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants from the Lamiaceae family. It's often known by the common names Bee Balm, Bergamot, and Horsemint. The leaves are slender, slightly serrated, lance-shaped and are sometimes slightly hairy. Monarda flowers are tubular with a narrow upper lip and wider lower lip with wild forms having single flowers while some cultivated forms can have double. Flower colour varies by variety but most wild forms are usually red or pink while cultivated forms can be many shades. Monarda has a long history as a medicinal plant by Native Americans who used it in the treatment of minor wounds. It is a natural source of the antiseptic compound thymol which is the active ingredient in some modern mouthwashes.
About Monarda Jacob Cline: Jacob Cline is a compact, variety which produces a very pretty display of rich red coloured flowers in large clusters during the mid to late summer.
Grows to a height of around 25cm and spreads to around 20-25cm.
