A lovely attractive basil with rich green foliage and spikes of red & purple flowers in late summer with a strong, upright habit. Quite a high yielding basil with a sweet, spicy flavour. Ajaka is more tolerant to cold weather than some Basils and has very good resistance to diseases.

Basil, from the Lamiaccae family, is native to tropical regions from Africa to Southeast Asia and is used worldwide as a culinary herb. It's mostly used for its fresh leaves which generally have a slightly anise flavour with a strong, sweet smell and are added to dishes at the last moment as high temperatures will diminish the flavour.

The leaves can also be dried although the a lot of the flavour is lost. The flower buds can also be eaten and have a more subtle flavour. Basil is classed as a tender herb and our varieties won't withstand a frost.

    About the Basil Ajaka

    Care Instructions

Basil will need protection from wind and frosts. It prefers soil that is rich and well draining. Space them around 12 inches apart, so they get enough airflow and sunlight.

    Position, sunlight and more

Basil prefer a nice sunny spot and to be kept away from drafts. If you have a sunny windowsill, Basil can grow very successfully there. In the warmer months your plants can be left outside. Drainage is a key to Basil being successful and a well drained soil will help the plant thrive.

    Height and Spread

Basil Ajaka can grow up to 60cm in both height and spread.

    Feeding, Pruning & more

Feeding - Basil requires little to no feed. In fact, too much and you can lose the flavour. Twice a year a light liquid fertilizer for basil grown outdoors.
Pruning - Pinch back leaves, this encourages plant to grow more full and bushy.
Propagation - Cuttings is an easy way to grow free new basil plants, whilst benefiting the mother plant too.

Our pot & plant size explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.

    Starter Plant (Plug Plant)

Plug Size: 2cm by 4cm. Our most popular size. This is often the most economical way of buying plants and is a great way to get a head start on the season. Generally this size is best to be potted up before planting out.

Plug Size: 6cm by 7cm. A fantastic alternative to a 9cm pot and saves on plastic too. The plants in this size are well established and give you a head start. This size is perfect for planting straight into containers and baskets as well as the garden.
