Sage Common aka, 'Grower's Friend' is a non flowering Sage with an upright habit and fragrant, rich green leaves. One of the best Sages for culinary use, as Sage's can alter their flavour after flowering, whereas Grower's Friend very rarely, if ever blooms

Sage is an evergreen, perennial member of the Lamiaceae family native to the Mediterranean region. It has a long history of medicinal and culinary use as well as some varieties making particularly pretty ornamental herbs as well. During the late spring and summer sage flowers come out which can range in colour based on variety but are mostly pink or purple.

The leaves are most often greyish green, slightly rugose textured and covered in small, soft hairs and have a warm, savoury, slightly peppery flavour. Sage is listed as one the 'essential herbs' in Britain along with Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme. A traditional compliment to pork or stuffing, Sage has many culinary uses and goes well with cheeses or flavouring pasta. The leaves can also be used to flavour a warm herbal tea.

Care Instructions

Sage enjoy a free draining soil, not to be waterlogged. If unsure, plant in a raised bed or container. Water well after planting, then once established, water as normal. If in containers, soil may dry out quicker, so aim to keep the soil slightly moist.

Position, sunlight and more

Sage loves a warm, sheltered spot in full sun. Alternatively, a bright windowsill.

Height and Spread

Sage Common can grow up to 60-90cm and spread up to 100cm.

Feeding, Pruning & more

Feeding - Lay a mulch of compost to help stop soil, from drying out.
Pruning - Deadhead after flowering to encourage new shoots and fresh leaves. Parent plant can be hard pruned annually.
Propagation - Take cuttings in early summer, to get new free plants, whilst benefiting the parent plant too.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.

	Starter Plant (Plug Plant) Plug Size: 2cm by 4cm. Our most popular size. This is often the most economical way of buying plants and is a great way to get a head start on the season. Generally this size is best to be potted up before planting out.
	Jumbo Plug Plug Size: 6cm by 7cm. A fantastic alternative to a 9cm pot and saves on plastic too. The plants in this size are well established and give you a head start. This size is perfect for planting straight into containers and baskets as well as the garden.
	9cm pot Pot size: 9cm by 9-10cm. This size hold some well established plants, some of which maybe around 1 year old. We sell most of our ranges in this size and most of the plants sold in this size, are established enough to be planted straight outside.
	13cm or 1 litre pot Pot size: 12-13cm by 12-15cm Currently our largest size of plant, with the exception of our planted containers. Many of our House Plants are available in this size, as well as some special collections and varieties.
