5 Minute Friday - Keeping Summer Plants Going

Keep Your Garden Looking Its Best All Summer Long!

This week I’m giving you a few tips to keep your summer flowers going all season!

Deadheading

Deadheading any flowering plant is important for encouraging new growth and increasing the production of flowers during the blooming season. If you've got flowering plants in pots, borders, containers, or hanging baskets, deadheading them regularly will encourage new growth, and keep them flowering all season!

All you need to do is find the flowers that have gone over and pinch them out. Check your plants regularly and repeat when needed!

Feeding

Feeding flowering or fruit producing plants is just as important as watering them if you want to keep them going all summer! Producing flowers and fruit takes a lot of energy, so using some good quality, multi-purpose plant food every two weeks as a general rule will help keep your plants looking their best!

Watering

If you're keeping a garden, you'll most likely be watering regularly, but this is especially crucial in the summer. With temperatures of over 30 degrees some days, water everyday and early in the day to reduce the amount of water that gets lost to evaporation. Feel the compost, if its not wet, water again. If you can, top dressing your plants will help them retain moisture and keep their roots cool.
