A very productive plant considering the size of the fruit is quiet large. This mild chilli is often picked immature when they are a lime green to yellow colour. This is when they have a crisp and fresh flavour. They can be left to ripen to a deep red. It produces large fruit that can measure as much as 15cm in length and 4 cm in width. A mild heat of 3/10.

As with all Chilli plants they love the heat, after all they are subtropical. This is especially true when they are young. All Chilli starter plants should be grown on the windowsill or a greenhouse until they are established and the weather is warm.

About the Chilli Hungarian Hot Wax Plant

    Care Instructions

Plant in moist, but well drained soil. A standard multipurpose compost is best, we find they prefer it to expensive ones. Keep them watered, but not too wet. Once fruit appears, spray at least 2 inches of water per week.

    Position, sunlight and more

Chillies definitely prefer full sun and a sheltered position. A sunny windowsill is ideal, don't let soil dry out. 20 degrees is a good heat for them.

    Height and Spread

Hungarian Hot Wax will grow 60cm in height and spread 45cm.

    Feeding, Pruning & more

Feeding - A high potassium liquid fertiliser weekly, once flowering.
Pruning - Pinch out shoot tips, to encourage side shoots.
Propagation - Chillies are best grown from seeds, you can collect your own seeds from the fruit, however some varieties may not come true to form.

Our pot & plant size explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.

    Starter Plant (Plug Plant)

Plug Size: 2cm by 4cm. Our most popular size. This is often the most economical way of buying plants and is a great way to get a head start on the season. Generally this size is best to be potted up before planting out.

Plug Size: 6cm by 7cm. A fantastic alternative to a 9cm pot and saves on plastic too. The plants in this size are well established and give you a head start. This size is perfect for planting straight into containers and baskets as well as the garden.
