What you can create

A Naturally Layered Cottage Garden Border

Instead of a collection of unrelated plants, you get a planting combination designed around the way a successful border works: lower colour at the front, softness and movement through the middle, and height and structure at the back.

Enjoy hellebore colour when much of the garden is still waiting for spring

Season-Long Colour

The collection is selected to provide flowering interest from late spring through to autumn.

Balanced From Front to Back

Four lower-growing varieties, four middle-layer varieties and four taller varieties help give the border a natural, layered structure.

Colour, Texture and Movement

Plants are selected to complement one another rather than leaving you to work out which combinations belong together.

A Fuller Border, Sooner

Established 9cm plants give you a useful head start compared with tiny plug plants and can be planted straight into the garden.

Inside your collection

12 Plants With a Place and Purpose

Your collection contains 12 different cottage garden varieties. Rather than choosing them at random, the plants are divided into three useful groups so each has a role in creating the finished border.

Chosen to work together

More Than a Random Mix of Plants

A good cottage garden border needs more than plenty of flowers. This collection is balanced around height, spread, colour and season so the plants can work together as one display.

More Than a Random Mix of Plants

Natural Layers

Lower, middle and taller varieties give the planting structure while retaining the relaxed character of a cottage garden.

Complementary Colour

Seasonal varieties are selected to complement one another and create a cohesive display rather than an unrelated assortment.

Texture and Movement

Different plant shapes and textures help create the softer, flowing appearance that makes cottage-style planting so appealing.

A Longer Season of Interest

The collection is selected for flowering interest from late spring through to autumn.

The Difficult Decisions Are Already Made

The collection is balanced for height, spread, colour and season. That means you can concentrate on planting and enjoying your border rather than trying to build a compatible plant list from scratch.

Lay Everything Out Before You Plant

Use the front, middle and back labels to position your plants while they are still in their pots. This lets you see the overall arrangement before putting anything into the ground.

Why I Like This Way of Planting

The key is choosing plants for the whole border, not looking at each plant in isolation.”

I like a cottage garden border to feel relaxed, but there still needs to be some thought behind it. You need lower plants at the front, something to carry the planting through the middle and enough height at the back to give the display structure.

That is what we are trying to make easier with this collection. The plants are selected for their different roles and grouped so you know roughly where everything needs to go.

Because they are established 9cm plants, you can plant them straight into the garden rather than having to grow tiny plug plants on first.

Arrange First Put the plants out in their front, middle and back groups before you start digging.
Think in Layers Use the different heights to create one connected display rather than 12 isolated plants.
Give Them Time to Settle Water well after planting and allow the plants to establish and develop into the border.

Questions answered

Before You Plant Your Cottage Garden Border

Here are the practical details to help you decide whether the collection is right for your garden and understand what to expect.

What size plants will I receive?

The collection is supplied as established plants in 9cm pots. They are larger than young plug plants and can be planted straight into the garden without a separate growing-on stage.

Which varieties will I receive?

You will receive 12 different cottage garden varieties: four for the front, four for the middle and four taller varieties for the back. Exact varieties are selected from the best available seasonal stock, so the individual plants may vary.

Why might the varieties vary?

The collection is selected from available seasonal stock. This allows the nursery to choose plants for the intended cottage garden display rather than fixing the collection to varieties that may not always be at their best.

How much border will one collection fill?

The collection is designed to fill approximately 1.5–2m² of border.

Where should I position the plants?

Use the supplied planting groups as your guide: taller varieties towards the back, medium-height plants through the middle and lower-growing plants towards the front. The collection grows well in Full sun to partial shade.

When will the plants flower?

The collection is selected to provide flowering interest from late spring through to autumn. Exact flowering times will depend on the varieties supplied, weather, growing conditions and care.

How quickly will my border fill out?

Plants begin settling in during weeks 1–2, with new growth developing around weeks 3–5 and more colour, structure and movement developing around weeks 6–8. Growth speed varies with weather, conditions and care, so these timings should be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee.

When will my collection be dispatched and what happens if a plant arrives damaged?

The plants will be delivered between 3-5 working days. If plants are damaged on arrival please contact us as soon as possible and we will be happy to sort it out for you.
