FAQ's

Is this plant "garden ready"

Maybe, we prefer our plug plants (also known as starter plants) to be potted up before going into the garden. The ideal size is a 9 cm pot (you can also plant straight into a basket), but it can be slightly smaller or larger if you would prefer. In the warmer months, you may get away with planting straight out, but it is probably not worth the risk.

Are these not Pelargoniums rather than Geraniums?

Yes, they are. We tend to use the word Geranium as that is used more commonly but Pelargonium is the correct name.

What is the difference between a "Zonal" Geranium and an "Upright" Geranium?

Nothing! these are just different terms for the same thing. Zonal/upright geraniums are the type of geranium that are used in patio pots, containers, planting schemes and the centre of hanging baskets. As the name suggests these plants have an upright habit.

Should I deadhead my Geranium?

You don't have to but if you do you will be treated to more flowers throughout the flowering period

Why has my Geranium plant been cut at the top?

This is known as stopping. The plants you get may not be stopped. The reason we do this is that it will help the plants bush out, create more stems and produce more flowers.

What compost should I use?

A good quality multipurpose compost is ideal for this. You can use your own compost but make sure you know that it is not too high (or low) in nutrients.

Will I get the plants in the picture?

Yes, In the main picture. As this plant is a starter plant it will not be flowering but will grow to be the same as the picture. The plug plant picture is used to give you an idea of the size and may not be the same variety.

What is a plug plant?

A plug plant is a small starter plant that is perfect to pot up into a larger plant. We grow and sell so many of these because they allow us to do it for such a good price.

Is the plug plant in the picture the one I will get?

No, we use this picture just to give you an idea of the size of the plant.

Pot sizes explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.
