This is a collection of some of our most popular Thyme plants. The collection is made up of 6 different varieties all of which will be labelled in the pack.

About the Thyme 'Family': Thyme is a member of the Lamiaceae family. They are very useful herbs with many culinary uses as well as being used medicinally and looking great as well. The widespread of Thyme throughout Europe is thought to be due to the Romans who used the scent to purify buildings and flavour cheeses and liqueurs. Thyme can be used both fresh or dried with fresh leaves able to be frozen to retain their flavour and dried Thyme retaining its flavour much better than most herbs. Thyme is very commonly used as part of a bouquet garni and as a component of herbes de Provence. The leaves are often used to add flavour to stews, salads, roasts, and fish dishes. The plants themselves usually have long, thin, and very fragrant leaves which are usually a rich green but can vary depending on the variety.

FAQ

Can I choose which varieties I get?

Unfortunately not, to keep this pack priced so competitively, you can not choose which varieties you get, but we will pick the best of the time. We do sell the varieties separately but they are more expensive.

Is this plant "garden ready"

Maybe, we prefer our plug plants (also known as starter plants) to be potted up before going into the garden. The ideal size is a 9 cm pot, but it can be slightly smaller or larger if you would prefer. In the warmer months you may get away with planting straight out, but it is probably not worth the risk.

What compost should I use?

A good quality multipurpose compost is idea for this. You can use your own compost but make sure you know that it is not too high (or low) in nutrients.

Will each variety be labeled?

Yes. you will get 6 different varieties in this collection.

Will I get the plants in the picture?

Maybe, The picture is of some of the Thyme varieties we grow, and more than likely you will get some of these but we will select from the best plants of the moment.

Are all of these plants Hardy?

Yes. all of the plants in this selection are hardy in the UK

What is a plug plant?

A plug plant is a small starter plant that is perfect to pot up into a larger plant. We grow and sell so many of these because they allow us to do it for such a good price.

Is the plant in the picture the one I will get?

No, we use this picture just to give you an idea of the size of the plant.

Pot sizes explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.

Starter Plant (Plug Plant)

Plug Size: 2cm by 4cm. Our most popular size. This is often the most economical way of buying plants and is a great way to get a head start on the season. Generally this size is best to be potted up before planting out.

Jumbo Plug

Plug Size: 6cm by 7cm. A fantastic alternative to a 9cm pot and saves on plastic too. The plants in this size are well established and give you a head start. This size is perfect for planting straight into containers and baskets as well as the garden.
