Doone Valley is a creeping or trailing Thyme with rounded, dark green and gold variegated leaves and large, pale purple flowers in the summer. The foliage has a strong, lemony scent and looks great with it's starkly contrasting variegation.

Thyme retains its flavour much better than most herbs. It is very commonly used as part of a bouquet garnish and as a component of herbs de Provence. The leaves are often used to add flavour to stews, salads, roasts and fish dishes. The plants themselves usually have long, thin and very fragrant leaves, which are usually a rich green, but can vary depending on the variety.  Thyme can be used both fresh or dried with fresh leaves able to be frozen to retain their flavour and dried.

About the Thyme Doone Valley

Care Instructions

Thyme, once established, is usually unfussy. They just don't like things too cold and damp. Pop in well drained soil. They need watering in while establishing, then they rarely need watering, except when it's warm and especially dry.

Position, sunlight and more

Thyme likes a warm, sunny place. The more sun, the stronger the flavour. Makes for a perfect windowsill herb.

Height and Spread

Doone Valley will grow to height of about 15cm and spread up to 25cm.

Feeding, Pruning & more

Feeding - Thyme doesn't like rich soil, but will enjoy a high potash plant food in the spring.
Pruning - Your herbs can be picked all year around. Trim after flowering to keep them compact and promote new growth.
Propagation - Cuttings are best way, to grow new plants. They don't take long to root, then you can transfer to a pot or the ground. Cuttings should be at least 3" long.

Our pot & plant size explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.

Starter Plant (Plug Plant)

Plug Size: 2cm by 4cm. Our most popular size. This is often the most economical way of buying plants and is a great way to get a head start on the season. Generally this size is best to be potted up before planting out.

Jumbo Plug

Plug Size: 6cm by 7cm. A fantastic alternative to a 9cm pot and saves on plastic too. The plants in this size are well established and give you a head start. This size is perfect for planting straight into containers and baskets as well as the garden.
