About the Basil "Family"

Ocimum basilicum
About the Basil 'Family': Basil, from the Lamiaccae family, is native to tropical regions from Africa to Southeast Asia and is used worldwide as a culinary herb. It's mostly used for its fresh leaves which generally have a slightly anise flavour with a strong, sweet smell and are added to dishes at the last moment as high temperatures will diminish the flavour. The leaves can also be dried although the a lot of the flavour is lost. The flower buds can also be eaten and have a more subtle flavour. Basil is classed as a tender herb and our varieties won't withstand a frost.

Perfect for the cook and gardener. Pop it on Pasta, Pizza's. Chop it on fresh salad, or smash it into your avocado. Basil is the kitchen must have.

FAQ's

Can I choose which varieties I get?

Unfortunately not, to keep this pack priced so competitive you can not choose which varieties you get but we will pick the best of the time. We do sell the varieties separately but they are more expensive.

Is this plant "garden ready"

Maybe, we prefer our plug plants (also known as starter plants) to be potted up before going into the garden. The ideal size is a 9 cm pot, but it can be slightly smaller or larger if you would prefer. In the warmer months you may get away with planting straight out, but it is probably not worth the risk.

What compost should I use?

A good quality multipurpose compost is idea for this. You can use your own compost but make sure you know that it is not too high (or low) in nutrients.

Will each variety be labelled?

Yes. you will get 3 different varieties in this collection, 2 of each type.

Will I get the plants in the picture?

Maybe, The picture is of all the Basil varieties we grow and more than likely you will get some of these but we will select from the best plants of the moment.

Are all of these plants Hardy?

No. Currently there is not a "true" basil that is hardy. The varieties we send you are as sturdy as we have grown and are cutting raised so will stand more punishment than most basil's but it is untrue to say they are hardy

What is a plug plant?

A plug plant is a small starter plant that is perfect to pot up in to a larger plant. We grow and sell so many of these because the allow us to do it for such a good price.

Is the plug plant in the picture the one I will get?

No, we use this picture just to give you an idea of the size of the plant.

Pot sizes explained

At Newlands Nursery we grow and sell plants in a variety of different sizes, from small starter plants up to planted containers.

We know it can be tricky to picture the size of each plant. This page gives you an idea of the size of the plants we are sending out.

Please keep in mind that plants vary from one season to the next. The size of the plant refers to the pot or plug it is grown in, rather than the height of the plant, unless specifically mentioned on the plant page.

Starter Plant (Plug Plant)

Plug Size: 2cm by 4cm. Our most popular size. This is often the most economical way of buying plants and is a great way to get a head start on the season. Generally this size is best to be potted up before planting out.

Jumbo Plug

Plug Size: 6cm by 7cm. A fantastic alternative to a 9cm pot and saves on plastic too. The plants in this size are well established and give you a head start. This size is perfect for planting straight into containers and baskets as well as the garden.

9cm pot
