EP225 - How to top dress your Chilli Plants

On Todays 5minute Friday, we are going to top dress your Chilli Plants.

We are doing this now, as it looks like summer is coming, which can mean extra watering, so this is worth doing regardless, as we don’t want to be using lots of water, financially or environmentally.

So what we are going to do, is top dress chilli plants, anything that fruits, needs a reasonable amount of water. We stress chillies to make them a bit hotter, and it gives them a better flavour.  Some plants will always need more water than others, if we look at strawberries and tomatoes, they too, need plenty of moisture on the roots.

This really does cut down on the amount you have to water, so you can top dress with lots of things like, bark, slate or pea shingle. I am going for pea shingle, because it’s cheap, and from when we used to do the shows, it sets off the plants really well.

What we do is put a layer of pea shingle across the top, this stops the compost losing as much moisture, and keeps the roots a little bit cooler.

Cover the soil with the pea shingle, relatively thick, around 1cm, and you will be amazed at firstly, how much better it looks, and secondly it really will help maintain the moisture. This is ideal for many plants this time of year, and will cut down on the amount you need to water.

Browse our plants that are available now.
